Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States Western District

Formed, along with the Eastern District, in 1834 following boundary disputes with the West Pennsylvania Synod. Met each year except when the entire synod met.
